A mother’s worst fear

Adriel before the accident, sitting in the grass looking behind her at the camera.

My daughter before the accident

On October 22rd, my daughter was struck by a hit and run drunk driver while walking down a sidewalk with enough force to knock her 20 feet.  She was a “Jane Doe” at the hospital for almost 48 hours before I got a call and could be at her side.

Adriel, with scrapes on her face and breathing and feeding tubes, in a neck brace.

The health professionals around me used words like “tramatic brain injury”, “unconscious”,  her brain is bleeding and swelling - ”it will just take time”–but instead of the original estimates of 2-3 days before she woke up, it took almost 2 weeks before she opened her eyes and recognized voices. But even when her eyes were open, she really wasn’t there.  She was unable to talk, unable to walk, and did not understand what was going on.  The physical damage was severe and painful–a broken leg, scrapes and lacerations, a dislocated shoulder, damage to a previously broken and plated arm–but the damage to her mind has been the most heartbreaking.

Adriel lying in a hospital bed, unconscious, with a cast around her leg.

She was unconscious for two weeks

She suffers from severe memory loss.  Her memories of childhood are gone.  She does not remember that her father passed away, and asks where he is  before she goes into surgery. She does remember people, just not events.  She requires physical, occupational and extensive speech therapy.

We are asking for donations to help with the medical bills our insurance does not cover: deductibles, transportations costs, medication, and counseling to help her to achieve a full recovery.

I am very sorry about your tragedy. I too have had to deal with a hit and run. My daughter was ran down on Las Vegas Blvd on her fathers birthday Jan 13th 2010. Jamie had _brain surgery, her spleen removed, 8 facial fractures,a broken nose her front teeth knocked out and her leg broken in 26 places. Now because of the brain surgery she has seizures and has been diagnosed with eppilepsy. We have no insurance. It cost 500.00 for a 3 week supply of her seizure medicine which she must take every day and she still has seizures. I know what you are going through. I would like to start a support group called survivors of hit and run drivers. Your daughter was actually my daughters roommate when she was in the hospital back then. If you need someone to talk to feel free to call me please. 702-409-4583 my name is kathy
